yeah real estate just doesn't sound fun to do forget bragging rights :b how did you get started? like, i'm not so great at t-shirts but i've been trying to do a lot of advertising and i'm getting little 20 dollar gigs here and there but i definitely wanna do more
For illustration gigs, it's all about networking and exposing yourself to the right people. If t-shirts are your focus, I'd hit up emptees.com You can post your work there, as well you'll get some good information and contacts (check out their forum). If you post enough quality work on that site over a couple months, you'll probably get hit up by a few companies but about 80% of them are going to offer you peanuts (underpay) for your work, try to avoid them when you can... They're nice to have around when you're broke and desperate BUT do try to avoid taking work from them when you can.
If you want to get good gigs for advertising, hit up all the local companies, specifically ones with e-mail addresses and ask them if they need any design work (ad, brochures, logos, punch up, flyers, etc.). Be sure to use their company name in the e-mail (if not the actual person's name that you're mailing to) and send them relevant portfolio pieces and/or your folio website. Be as personable as possible.
For advertising work, you should get a copy of all the local papers, not the state or big city papers, but the county, town and small city papers. Look for ads that look like they could use some work, contact those companies and try to convince them that they need to revamp their ad campaign, via your graphic design services.
Above all, don't sell yourself short. Think BIG, act BIG and eventually, you'll be BIG! Sounds like corporate bullshit but it works when it comes to commercial art/business art.
wow! you have some damn good ideas dude thank you, i'm so glad i asked. lol now that i'm reading i'm like duh, i shoulda done that months ago haha, i never woulda thought of any of this. i've been like running out of ways to advertise myself for the life of me i could not think of step 2 thanks for takin the time to give me some advice. this is definitely going to help me get a lot more professional work done that i can actually (hopefully) use in my portfolio. right now i got nothin lol
hehe, i love this, nice bit of irony. Kanye is bigger than jesus nowadays, I don't dig his stuff honestly but he does carry this messianic-save-the-world-through-rap-music vibe about him, with him believing his hype the most. that's why this shirt is kickass, cuz kanye is a tool.
