Another movie that gave me nightmares was "Die blechtrommel." [link]
It's a German movie about a kid who decides he doesn't want to grow anymore. It has to do with the years going up to the 2nd world war.
Not sure what scared me so much that I had to crawl into bed safe in between my mom and dad. Haven't seen it since.
